This two-volume baojuan begins with an explanation of the Sacred Edict, followed by extended narration of legends associated with historical figures including Yue Fei, Zhu Yuanzang, and Xuanzang and the morality lessons that can be drawn from karmic causes and effects.

This copy of 醒心寶卷, reprinted in 民間寶卷 v.15, lacks a title page. The single preface (引) in this copy concludes with the line 光緒歲次癸巳冬月之吉蠡河散人. The date, the 11th month of Guangxu 19, corresponds to late 1893/early 1894. At the leftmost edge of this page, there is another date in the following publication related information: "光緒歲次甲午春月之吉常郡蔣玉真撰，陳燦子書, corresponding to early 1894.

In Che Xilun's (车锡伦) 2010 article on Xinke xingxin baojuan[1], Che connects the pen name Lihe sanren 蠡河散人, at the end of the preface, with Jiang Yuzhen 蔣玉真, named in the leftmost line on page 2a, because the preface writer identifies himself as the text's author when he explains why he composed the text. He explains how he wanted something which would convey the values from Lü Dongbin's 醒心經 in a simplified form that shallow readers could comprehend. (吾奉呂帝多年見有醒心真經喜不自勝業經刊刻行世無奈真經文詞深奧淺見之人不能明達洞曉是以復仿效真經之意杜撰俗言語一篇名曰醒心寶卷).
Che considers this baojuan to be of the "admonishing morality" ("勸世文"類) subtype of the genre. His article summarizes the main narrative concerns of the text, and gives an excellent summary of how the Sacred Edict was reinterpreted and transmitted via popular genres.
Che also gives a location and publisher for the copy he was working with as 常州培本堂 Changzhou Peiben tang. In the particular copy reprinted in Minjian baojuan which this entry describes, no such information appears on any of its reproduced pages. However, Harvard University library holds a copy of Xinke xingxin baojuan[2] which includes a cover, title page, and two additional paratextual materials before the same preface (引) with which this copy begins. The title page on Havard's copy is dated 光緒歲次癸巳嘉平月 (twelfth month of Guangxu 19, equivalent to early 1894) and the publication location is 常郡府廟培本堂.
Comparing these two copies page by page demonstrates that the same blocks were used for both copies, at least for all the pages we are able to compare. Lacking proof that the Minjian baojuan facsimile edition had the same cover, the most I (Katherine) am comfortable saying with full certainty is that the copy described here appears to be printed from the same blocks as the bulk of Harvard's copy. Comparison for block degradation is inconclusive, due in part to comparing this black-and-white facsimile reprint with a full color high definition scan. Therefore, it is impossible to say if these are different copies from the same 1893/4 imprint (where the copy used for the Minjian baojuan reprint was missing its cover and first three folio pages) or if this copy is a different imprint that never had those pages in the first place.
Other stray observations:
- v.1 folio pages 9, 10, 15, 18, 19 use 宝 instead of 寶 in the title on the 版心
- starting on v.1 folio page 29, the woodblock typeface used for the title on the 版心 changes from the same kaishu style used in the body of the text to the blockier "Song/Artisanal" style
- v.1 folio page 43 the title on the 版心 is completely blacked out
- Harvard's v.2 has another own cover, but this facsimile version does not - bound together in one volume? or cover of v.2 missing also from this copy.
