Connections to other items

In 1820, Liu Yinghua劉暎華 obtained this precious scroll from a Taoist and printed it in small quantities. Later, Chen Qingyun陳青雲 sponsored the mass publication of this book, which is the earliest version we can see today (O95). Since then, this text has been widely circulated throughout Jiangsu Province and has been reprinted repeatedly. The version of Peibentang培本堂 (J162) was published after the Taiping Revolution in Changzhou常州. At the end of the Qing Dynasty, both the spirit-writing group and Buddhist believers revised this text to reveal their doctrines.
In the Republican period, this text experienced a change from the precious scroll to the morality book. A vital version was revised in 1918. Yin Shuixin印水心, an intellectual from Yancheng鹽城, adapted and renamed it “The Precious Scroll of Needle and Heart”鍼心寶卷(Q129 & U7). Yin Shuixin was a publishing expert who used to work in Shanghai Commercial Press and Zhonghua Book Company. He took the precious scroll of needle and heart to Shanghai Hongda Morality Book Publisher上海宏大善書局. After that, a lot of lithographic precious scrolls were dispatched to people as a kind of morality books. On the back cover of this text, there is an advertisement named “Eight Tips for Spreading Morality Books”善書流通八法. Yin Shuixin was a member of Tongshanshe同善社 and the spirit-writing altar Shengdetan盛德壇, and these groups supported the publication process.
