Guangcheng yizhi is a liturgical collection attributed to Chen Zhongyuan 陳仲遠 (1734-1802), a prominent Quanzhen priest active on Mount Qingcheng 青城山, Sichuan.

Collection Publication History

Bony Schachter [ENG]:The original edition attributed to Chen Zhongyuan cannot be earlier than 1778. This present reprint of the Guangcheng yizhi 廣成儀制 comprises various items published during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Chen Zhongyuan 陳仲遠 (1734-1802) was a native of Xinjin County 新津縣, in Sichuan. Chen lost his father at age seven; he was then adopted as a disciple by a certain Mao Laiyu 毛來玉. Following his master’s death, Chen went to the Wenwu Gong 文武宮, in Wenjiang County 溫江縣. In 1774 he was appointed abbot of the Panlong Si 蟠龍寺. In 1778, obeying orders from Wen Shou 文綬, who was the Viceroy of Sichuan (r. 1776-1781), Chen established a Great Retreat of Land and Water (shuilu dazhai 水陸大齋) for the deceased soldiers of the Jinchuan Campaigns (Jinchuan zhi yi 金川之役). Wen Shou presented Chen’s ritual compilation to the Qing court, which added the character zhi 制 (imperially approved) to its title (Yin Zhihua 2014: 174). Chen’s lost edition of the Guangcheng yizhi, therefore, was completed before 1778. The name Guangcheng 廣成 in the book title refers to the great Tang liturgist Du Guangting 杜光庭 (850-933).

A summary of 1910, printed by the Er’xian an 二仙庵, records a Guangcheng yizhi in 42 juan, comprising 259 different texts (Yin Zhihua 2014: 176). The present reprint comprises 275 texts. Its modern editors (Hu Daojing 胡道靜, Chen Yaoting 陳耀庭, Duan Wengui 段文桂, and Lin Wanqing 林萬清) present their reprint as a reconstruction of Chen Zhongyuan’s original edition. However, it is impossible to ascertain the degree to which the present reprint faithfully reproduces the structure of Chen’s lost edition.

The collection, nevertheless, offers a comprehensive ritual program. It comprises Offerings (jiao 醮) for the benefit of the living and for the salvation of the deceased, the basic program of the morning, noon, and afternoon audiences (zao wu wan ke 早午晚課), sublimation rituals (liandu 錬度), the worship of constellations (dou 斗), mainstream deities (e.g., Wenchang 文昌, Guandi 關帝, Jiuku Tianzun 救苦天尊) and local gods (e.g., Chuanzhu 川主, a local divinity of the Sichuan area). Apart from ritual hymns (zan 讚), petitions (biao 表), sacred steps (gang 罡), and incantations (zhou 咒), the collection offers explanations about esoteric lore, including visualization practices and the secret names (hui 諱) of Daoist gods. Part of its contents found its way into contemporary Daoist ritual.

This modern attempt at reconstructing Chen's original work organizes content according to a thematic standard. Comprising 275 texts, only 96 items of the collection provide precise dates. The earliest text is a manuscript edition dated 1824 (Daoguang 4; Zhaowang ke 詔亡科, E.149.190), while the latest text is a 1915 (Minguo 4) printed edition.

Apart from the aforementioned 1824 manuscript, the earliest layer of our reprint includes a printed edition of 1855 (Xianfeng 5) and a manuscript of 1857 (Xianfeng 7; Qingwei yizhi lingbao yulu xuehu 清微儀制靈寶玉籙血湖, E.149.209). There is no evidence connecting the 1824 and the 1857 manuscripts to Chen Zhongyuan. This observation applies to other items of this reprint, including a manuscript named Qingwei yizhi zhengzou tianchao ji 清微儀制正奏天朝集 (E.149.211). Peng Zhiguo 彭至國 (1883-1942) and the Master of Rites (Gaogong 高功) Wei Zhiling 魏至齡 brought this text to the Erxian’an. It was hand-copied by the otherwise unknown Deng Yulin 鄧雨林 during the winter of 1908 (Guangxu 34). In the same year, Wei Zhiling, also known as Songxiazi 松遐子, produced the manuscript edition of the Zhupin zhaijiao raojia huiluan ji 諸品齋醮餞駕迴鑾集 (E.149.54). Since the undated manuscript Zhongyuan dahui qingsheng zhaochao ji 中元大會慶聖正朝集 (E.149.21) mentions Peng Zhiguo, it may have been produced during the Guangxu period. The printed edition of 1855 (Xianfeng 5), or Duren dazhai shiguo ji 度人大齋十過集 (E.149.243), now explicitly attributed to Chen Zhongyuan, mentions seven donors who contributed with a total of 3000 wen 文 in the winter of that year. More importantly, the last page of this text (vol. 15, p. 126) mentions a certain Yang Jiaocheng 楊教誠. He is connected to the Hewen zhengchao ji 和瘟正朝集 (E.149.138) and the Huode zhengchao ji 火德正朝集 (E.149.139), dated respectively to the third (guxi yue 姑洗月) and the fourth lunar months of 1886 (Guangxu 12). This is important information because Yang’s name appears in many undated printed texts, namely E.149.16-19 (a collection of talismans centered upon the Three Primes, or San Yuan 三元) and E.149.234-248 (a collection of rituals whose central theme is the Book of Salvation, or Duren jing 度人經). Judging from their typological features, these items may have been produced during the Xuantong reign, which paid testimony to a prolific textual production. Sixty-seven texts, or approximately two thirds of our 96 explicitly dated texts, were produced during that period. Forty-five texts were printed in 1911 (Xuantong 3). Some of these texts mention the third, fourth, and fifth lunar months as their date of print, demonstrating that they were produced prior to October of the same year, when the Xinhai Revolution 辛亥革命 broke out. Dynastic demise did not bring with it the interruption of publication activities. Accordingly, between 1912 (Minguo 1) and 1915 (Minguo 4), we identify 17 datable texts.

Typological features may provide some clues on the date and provenance of undated items. Dating back to 1907 (Guangxu 33), the item Baomiao jiaoyang hangzhao quanji 保苗醮揚斻昭全集 (E.149.133) presents the same typological features of our Xuantong and Republican editions (8 lines per page, 18 characters per line, black borders and a black fish tail/每面八行，每行十八字，四邊黑口，黑魚尾). It is not unreasonable to suppose that undated printed texts sharing the same typological features, which together with our dated texts represent a proximate total of 240 items, appeared between 1907 and 1915. If this is the case, these items were produced under the administration of Yan Yonghe 閻永和, who was also connected to the publication of the Chongkan daozang jiyao 重刊道藏輯要. His name appears in three items printed during the summer of 1909 (Xuantong 1): the Beidou zhengchao quanji 北斗正朝全集 (no. 83), the Tuhuang kuan qi tan quanji 土皇醮欵啟壇全集 (no. 98), and the Leiting zhengchao quanji 雷霆正朝全集 (no. 119). These three texts, attributed to Chen Zhongyuan, identify Yan Yonghe as the abbot of the Erxian’an, a position he assumed in 1892 (Guangxu 18).
