Mount Heng 衡山, located in Hengyang City 衡陽市, Hunan Province 湖南省, is one of the five sacred mountains 五嶽 (Mount Tai in the east 東岳泰山, Mount Hua in the west 西嶽華山, Mount Heng in the south 南嶽衡山, Mount Heng in the north 北嶽恆山, and Mount Hua in the middle 中嶽華山) and is also a sacred place for Daoism and Buddhism. The Zhuling dongtian 朱陵洞天 is the third of the 36 cave heavens of Daoism.
Heng yue zhi 衡嶽志 is a gazetteer on Mount Heng, edited by Peng Zan 彭簪 in 1528, who used to be a magistrate of Hengshan county. 明史·藝文志 said that the text has 8 fascicles (juan), and 四庫全書總目提要 said it has 13 fascicles, but the version in Sandong shiyi has only 6 fascicles. The 1st fascicle is about local natural scenery, the 2nd is about architecture, the 3rd is about figures of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Daoism, the 4th is about official rituals, and the 5th and 6th fascicles are about literary works.
