According to the preface, Zhao Rusheng 趙如升, a literatus from Daxing 大興 (in contemporary Beijing), compiled this book in order to interpret and disseminate the famous Wen Chang di jun yin zhi wen 文昌帝君陰騭文. The main text could be structured by four parts, including a sentence from the original text of the Yin zhi wen, Zhao’s commentary to the sentence, the numinous verification story collected by Zhao to support the text and commentary, and the picture drawn by Zhao to describe the story. More specifically, the picture and the corresponding verification story are on the same folio while the picture is on the right and the story left. The stories include legends and anecdotes from early to late imperial China.
