A man called Chen Ziping 陳子平 has a brother called Chen Zian 陳子安. They are very close. However, Chen Ziping's wife, woman You 尤, tries to break up the relationship between the brothers because she wants to occupy the property. Chen Ziling goes to collect a debt from a district magistrate, but is imprisoned for murder. Chen Zian comes to visit his brother and wants to replace him. The judge has them draw lots to decide who will die, and Zian gets the death lot. He is then executed. Zian's wife, Woman Qian 錢, falls ill after her husband's death and dies, leaving a son, Tingyu 廷玉, and a daughter, Yuebo 月波. woman You treats the children badly. Eventually, she is executed by lightning. Tingyu passes the Imperial Examination and his parents are resurrected. This story is set during the reign of Wanli 萬曆 Emperor (r.1573-1620).
