A robber called Xu Neng 徐能 robs a young couple. The husband is Su Yun 蘇雲, a county administrator. Xu pushes Su into the river and takes Su's wife. Afterwards, the wife flees with the help of Xu Neng's brother, Xu Yong 徐用. She ends up in a nunnery and gives birth to a boy. Unable to raise the baby in the nunnery, the woman abandons him and covers him with a white robe. The baby is seen by Xu Neng and adopted. Xu names the boy Xu Jizu 徐繼祖. Nineteen years later, Xu Jizu passes the imperial exam and becomes an official. He receives a case in which Xu Neng is sued, and the plaintiff is his mother. Finally, he knows everything and is reunited with his parents.
