A Zhuangyuan 狀元 (the one who achieves the highest score in the Imperial Examination) named Fang Qing 方卿 is framed by a traitor and executed. After his death, the traitor tries to kill his whole family. Fang has two sons and one daughter. The daughter, Feilong 飛龍, becomes a bandit leader and plans to rebel against the emperor, in order to take revenge on the traitor. In the end, the emperor executes the traitor and gives the three siblings high positions. The story is set in the period from the reign of Jiajing 嘉靖 Emperor (r. 1522-1566) to Wanli 萬歷 Emperor (r.1572-1620).
