There are two brothers called Yang Tingfu 楊廷福 and Yang Tingjian 楊廷鑑. Their family is in decline after the death of their father. Tingjian and Tinggui were both engaged when their father was alive, so Tingfu goes to his fiancée's house to ask for help. But his father-in-law refuses to give him any money. His fiancée secretly gives him a gold ornament, two pearls and some silver. His father-in-law accuses him of being a thief and puts him in jail. Jingjian comes to look for his brother and is also imprisoned. The brothers' mother complains to another official about the case and saves Tingjian. Tingjian finally passes the imperial examination and saves his brother. This story is set in the period from the Chongzhen崇禎 Emperor (r.1627-1644) to the Shunzhi順治 Emperor (r. 1643-1661).
