A girl called Li Xiuying 李秀英 is engaged to a man called Wang Yulin 王玉林. However, Xiuying's male cousin Gu Dian 顧殿, who is in favour of her, hates the marriage. He asks a matchmaker to get a jade hairpin from Xiuying and writes a love letter in Xiuying's name, putting the hairpin and the letter together. These things are seen by Yulin after the wedding. So Yulin doesn't touch his bride. In everyday life, Yulin treats Xiuying badly. Knowing this, Xiuying's father is angry and asks Yulin the reason. Yulin tells his father-in-law everything. Eventually they find out that Gu did it and that Xiuying is innocent. Yulin is forgiven by his wife and passes the imperial examination.
