A man called Shen Yi 申義 is poor after the death of his father. So he asks his fiancée's family for help. His fiancée, whose name is Meng Xiulan 夢秀蘭, is living with her uncle after the death of her parents. When Shen Yi arrives at Xiulan's house, Xiulan's uncle refuses to help him. Shen Yi and Xiulan run away from home. On the way, Xiulan falls ill and Shen Yi leaves her to find a place to stay. A bandit arrives and kidnaps Xiulan and her maid. However, it turns out that the bandit's leader, Zhou TIanbao 周天豹, is Shen Yi's cousin. So Xiulan and her maid, who are both good at martial arts, join the bandit. Eventually, Shen Yi passes the Imperial Examination and is reunited with Xiulan. This story is set during the reign of Qianlong Emperor (r.1735-1796).
