A poor man named Mo Ji 莫稽 marries a woman named Jin Yunu 金玉奴, whose father is super rich. Mo Ji lives in his father-in-law's home and feels humiliated. After passing the Imperial Examination, Mo is eager to get rid of his wife's family and, through marriage, make contact with other dignitaries. On a trip, he pushes his wife, Yunu into a river. But Yunu doesn't die. She meets another official, Xu Dehou 許德厚, who adopts her as his daughter. Xu then remarries her to Mo. At the wedding, the wife criticises Mo and then forgives him. Xu's deed is known to the god and he gets a good result. Mo, who should have lived to be seventy, died early because of drowning his own wife.
