This manuscript copy of Yu qingting baojuan 玉蜻蜒寶卷 was likely copied in either 1867 or 1927.
A man called Shen Lian 申璉 lives an idle life. One day he and a friend go to see an opera, where they meet a beautiful nun. Later, without telling his wife, Shen goes to the nunnery and lives with the nun. Shen's wife looks for him three times in the nunnery, but can't find him. Shen dies in the nunnery when the nun is already pregnant. The nun gives birth to a boy and abandons him, leaving a jade dragonfly in the swaddle. Shen's wife adopts the boy. When the boy grows up, he discovers the truth. After passing the Imperial Exam, he tells the Emperor everything and is reunited with his birth mother. This story is set during the reign of Jiajing 嘉靖 emperor (r.1521-1567).
