A retired official named Wang Yi 王儀 doesn't have any children. He is inspired by the god Guandi 關帝 to find a stepson. He then pretends to be a poor old man and sells himself to someone to be his stepfather. A man called Zhang Gan 張乾 buys him and promises to treat him like a father. Wang tests Zhang's filial piety by demanding good food and expensive clothes. To fulfil Wang's demands, Zhang sells his property and his own son.
