A man called Zeng Rong 曾荣, whose father was the political opponent of the traitorous official Yan Song 嚴嵩 (1480-1567). The entire Zeng clan was beheaded, and only Zeng Rong survived. Zeng changed his name and married Yan's granddaughter. Zeng also almost got engaged with two of another official's daughters while his true identity was being discovered. He is then sent to prison. With the help of the upright official Hai Rui 海瑞 (1514-1587), Zeng's clan is rehabilitated and Yan is punished.
