The story is set during the reign of Emperor Jiajing 嘉靖 (reigned 1521-1567). A woman called Mei Jiaoying 梅姣英 married a man called Yu Tingzu 鬱廷祖. The woman was harassed by another man called Cai Hu 蔡虎 when she went to a temple. She lost her handkerchief and Cai picked it up. Mei's husband misunderstood her and divorced her, by which time she was pregnant. Cai wanted to marry Mei. Mei's litter sister replaced her and committed suicide. Finally, Mei's Sun won the imperial examination with the highest score. Mei returned to her husband. Cai was punished. | |||
