A man named Lu Tingyi 盧庭義 passes the imperial examination as the first rank and is given a red robe by the emperor. He returns home to get married. One day after the wedding, Lu wears the red robe to receive guests. However, when he passes his wife, Sun Suyun 孫素雲, who is washing her face, she carelessly splashes some water on the robe. Lu is very upset and Suyun cries. Lu's mother tells him that he should forgive his wife. Lu is disappointed and leaves home to become a monk. Suyun also leaves home, pretending to be a man, to find her husband. On her way, Suyun meets an official whose family name is Zhang. Zhang wants to adopt Suyun as his son, and Suyun agrees. Lu meets the emperor on his way and is given another position. Sun Suyun has a brother called Sun Shengxiang 孫聖鄉, who is engaged to a girl called Gu Jiaoluan 顧姣鸞. But Gu's father, who thinks Shengxiang is too poor, breaks off the engagement and marries his daughter to the adopted son of the official Zhang. The son is, of course, Sun Suyun. The two girls pretend to be a couple and Suyun, already pregnant when she leaves home, gives birth to twins. Suyun's adoptive father sends her to take the imperial exam. She passes and is ranked second, while her brother, Sun Shengxiang, is ranked first. When her brother sees her, not knowing that she is a girl, he is very angry. He thinks the young man took his fiancée. In the end, Suyun tells the truth and everyone is happy.
