A man named Wang Qingming 王清明 goes to his fiancée's house with his servant Zhang Chun 張春. On the way, however, Zhang Chun kills Wang and tries to replace him in order to marry Wang's fiancée. Wang is saved by the god Taibaijinxing 太白金星. His fiancée, Tian Suzhen 田素貞, is revealed the truth by Guanyin Bodhisattva. When Wang arrives at his fiancée's house, his father-in-law refuses to accept him. He sues Zhang Chun, but is framed and sentenced to death. Tian Suzhen commits suicide when she hears that Wang is to be executed. She is resurrected by Guanyin Bodhisattva, who tells her to stay in the nunnery. Escaping from prison, Wang Qingming eventually passes the imperial examination and becomes an official. He meets Tian at the nunnery. They eventually get married.
