A man called Liangcai 良材 and his wife Miao Fengying 苗鳳英 are both filial. However, Liang Cai's stepmother, who wants to occupy the property, plans to evict them. In the process, Miao commits suicide and Liangcai runs away. Miao reincarnates in the body of another girl. An evil man called Qin Tianbao 秦天豹 wants to rape a maid, but kills her in the struggle. At the same time, Liangcai arrives in the village and is caught by mistake. Qin's sister Sumei 素梅 rescues him and they become engaged. Miao Fengying, disguised as a man, takes the Imperial Examination, passes it and is ranked first. At the same time, Liangcai disguises herself as a woman and is adopted by an official as his stepdaughter. Fengying eventually marries Liangcai again.
