A man called Wang Yingwen 王應文 from Ningbo 寧波 falls into the river and his body floats to Quanzhou 泉州. However, he doesn't die and when he wakes up he meets a girl, Yang Wanying 楊完英 and her father. Wang becomes engaged to Wanying, who sends him a plum-decorated ring. However, this ring is sent to Wanying by another girl, Luo Jiaoying 駱姣英, as a token of their friendship. Jiaoying is engaged to another man called Shen Biao 沈標, who is ugly and rude, and Jiaoying doesn't want to marry him. When she sees Wang Yingwen, she falls in love with him too. Shen Biao and his father are accused of rebellion and executed, and both Jiaoying and Wanying marry Wang Yingwen, who passes the imperial examination.
