A rich man named Tao Baiwan 陶百萬 is angry with his daughter Meiyu美玉 because she refuses to flatter him at his sixtieth birthday party. As punishment, Baiwan marries his daughter off to a beggar. But the couple soon become wealthy. This story wants to tell people that being rich or poor is destiny. The story is set during the reign of Yongle Emperor (r.1402-1424).

The title 拾富宝卷 is handwritten before the main text begins. On the final page, the text refers to itself in closing as 十富寶卷.
