During the journey of the monk Tang 唐僧 and his three disciples to the West, the Bodhisattva Guanyin once gave the monk Tang the task of asking a woman called Cuilian 翠蓮 for a gold hairpin. The monk does so, and Cuilian gives him the hairpin. When Cuilian's neighbour Wang sees this, she tells Cuilian's husband Liu Quan 劉全 that Cuilian is having an affair with the monk. Liu is furious and beats his wife severely. Cuilian then commits suicide. After her death, her spirit goes to the netherworld. When Liu learns that his wife has died, he feels very sorry for her. The emperor needs an emissary to the netherworld to send a pumpkin to the king of the netherworld. Liu, who wants to search for his wife in the netherworld, volunteers to be the emissary. After his death, his spirit arrives in the netherworld and sees his wife. He begs forgiveness from his wife and is accepted. The King of the netherworld is pleased with the pumpkin and resurrects the couple. Liu dies for a short time, so he resurrects easily. Cuilian, who has been dead for a long time, must possess the body of a princess. The emperor is also pleased and gives Liu a position as a military commander. The couple spend the rest of their lives doing good deeds.
