A man named Li Wenxiang 李文祥 is falsely accused of stealing two jade swallows. To save him, his fiancée disguises herself as a man and takes the Imperial Examination. Afterwards, she acts as a censor and clears her fiancé. Eventually, Li also passes the examination and they are married. The story is set during reign of Emperor Jiajing of the Ming (r.1521-1567).
