A man named Wang Zifu 王自富 is going to visit his fiancée's family. On the way he is drugged by his servant Zhang Chun 張春. Zhang Chun then takes the place of his master and goes to the fiancée's home. When Wang wakes up and arrives, his father-in-law refuses to recognise him. Wang has to leave. His fiancée, however, believes him and flees from home to look for her fiancé. On her way, she disguises herself as a man, even taking the Imperial examination, and marries a girl, woman Zhang. Eventually she is reunited with Wang Zifu, who also passes the exam.
