A man called Wen Lian 聞蓮 has a son called Wen Guanbao 聞官保. Wen Lian invites a teacher for Guanbao called Zhao Chunbao 趙春豹. Zhao has a daughter called Zhao Suzhen 趙素貞. Wen Lian plans to arrange an engagement between Guanbao and Suzhen. His wife disagrees because Zhao Chunbao is poor. Wen Lian doesn't listen to her and insists on the engagement. After the wedding, Wen Lian dies of illness, and Guanbao leaves home to take the imperial examination. Guanbao's mother then treats her daughter-in-law, Suzhen, badly, and Suzhen runs away from home. Suzhen is adopted by a family, Mo 莫, as their stepdaughter and gets on well with the family's blood daughter, Mo Wenqin 莫文琴. Already pregnant, Suzhen gives birth to a boy in the Mo family. Eventually, Suzhen is reunited with her husband Guanbao, who has passed the examination. Guanbao also takes Mo Wenqin as another wife.
