|commentary= '''The Author'''

陳致虛 Chen Zhixu was born in 廬陵 Luling County of Jiangxi Province in 1290. His 金丹大要 (Great Essentials of the Golden Elixir) is considered one of the core texts of Daoist inner alchemy.

'''Method and Source Materials of the Text'''

In the preface, Chen Zhixu makes it clear that his interpretation conjoined the common worldly approach (of recitation and prayer) to the Book of Salvation and Daoist inner alchemy that his master 趙友欽 had passed on, and that commentaries of his predecessors were cited to strengthen his argument. John Lagerway has pointed out Chen's borrowing of commentaries on the Book of Salvation composed by Song-dynasty authors 蕭應叟, 陳景元, 青元真人, and suggests that Chen was likely to have also read the commentary written by his contemporary 薛季昭 in 1303.
