A man called He Wenxiu 何文秀 married a woman called Wang Lianying 王蓮英 without the permission of Wang's father. The couple fled from Wang's family and met another man called Zhang Tang 張堂, who falsely accused He in order to take over He's wife, Lianying. Eventually, He becomes a high-ranking official, and Zhang is punished. The story is set during the reign of Jiajing 嘉靖 Emperor (r.1521-1567).
