A man called Wen Zijing 聞子敬 goes to the provincial examination after getting married. On the way, he gets married to another girl whose father financed him to take the exam. After passing the exam and getting a position, he brings his new wife back home as his concubine. While Zijing is away from home on a mission in the capital, his original wife almost kills the concubine and their newborn son due to a misunderstanding. The latter two flee the house and reunite with Zijing in a temple. Eventually, the son returns home with his father. The concubine remains in the temple and continues her practice.
