A man named Lin Ziwen 林子文 farms with his wife Sushi 蘇氏 to make a living after his family's decline. One day, Sushi goes to deliver food to her husband and meets an official called Gu Dingchen 顧鼎臣. Su serves food to Gu and is adopted as Gu's stepdaughter. He gives Su two jade pendants as a token and tells her that she can come to him if she is in trouble.
 
Later, Su is harassed by a man named Mao Qi 毛七, who wants to take her as one of his wives. In the process, Mao accuses Su's husband of murder. Su finally turns to her stepfather for help and saves her husband. He passes the imperial examination and becomes an official.
