A man called Cai Xu 蔡旭 was a "Zhuangyuan" 狀元 (people who achieved the highest level of the Imperial Examination) during the reign of Taizong Emperor of the Tang (Tangtaizong 唐太宗 r. 626-649). Cai travels to the nitherworld and sees people being punished there. He decides to practise and is eventually promoted to Immortal. In the text, Cai also let two people build a bridge.
