A man named Li Wenjun 李文俊 is poor and seeks help from his fiancée's family. However, his father-in-law breaks off the engagement and forces him to work as a servant in their house. He meets his fiancée in secret and is discovered by his father-in-law. He is so angry that he kills his daughter. The girl is saved by the goddess of Jiutian Xuannü 九天玄女. Eventually, Li passes the imperial examination and marries his fiancée.
