A man called Wen Bizheng 文必正 meets the daughter of an official called Huo DingJin 霍定金 in a nunnery. The girl loses her phoenix hairpin and is picked up by Wenzheng. Wenzheng sells himself to the Ho family as a servant and meets Dingjin again. They fall in love and become privately engaged. Wen later leaves the Huo family. Dingjin also leaves home to look for Wenzheng, disguised as a man. Eventually, Wenzheng passes the Imperial Examination with the highest score and marries five girls, including Dingjin.
