A girl called Xu Miaoying 徐妙英 believes in Buddhism and refuses to get married. To force her to marry, her parents first arrange an engagement for her with a man called Wang Chengzu 王承祖. They then arrange the wedding on the night of the Lantern Festival, tricking their daughter into attending the lantern show. Then Chengzu takes her by force. But on that day, Miaoying is saved by many gods. When Miaoying's father thinks that Chengzu has killed his daughter, he accuses Chengzu of murder. Chengzu is sentenced to join the army. On his way, he meets Yuying, who has already become immortal. This story is set during the reign of the emperor of Song Taizu 宋太祖 (r. 960-976).
