This seems to be a divination (chenwei 讖緯) about the reign of the royal Zhu 朱 family during the Ming dynasty (1368-1644). It obliquely describes the rise and fall of the Ming. The character 'Zhu' 朱 can be divided into two characters, '八' and 'niu' 牛. There are also other riddles related to characters in this scripture.

On the cover page, the title is 普明古佛遺劉八牛寳讚. On the first page, the title is 普明古佛遺留八牛寳讚. The character "liu" is different in the two titles.
