A tailor named Chen Kuixiu 陳葵秀 is very poor. However, he is favoured by the daughter of an official and the two make a private engagement. Eventually, Chen passes the Imperial examination with the highest score and marries his fiancée. This story is set during the reign of Zhengde 正德 Emperor (r.1505-1521).
