There are two brothers, Zhang Yuanxiang 張元祥 and Zhang Yuanqing 張元慶. Zhang's wife is called Wang Yueying 王月英 and their daughter is called Zhang Aihan 張艾汗. Zhang Yuanqing is engaged to a woman called Cheng Fengying 成鳳英. Zhang Yuanxiang 張元祥 leaves home to take the imperial examination and doesn't return for three years. Only his wife, brother and daughter remain at home. A fire burns down their house and they become poor. Cheng Fengying's father thus doesn't want his daughter to marry Zhang Yuanqing. He accuses Yuanqing of stealing and puts him in jail. In order to save her fiancé, Cheng Fengying disguises herself as a man and takes the imperial exam in her fiancé's name. Zhang Yuanxiang, who has already passed the exam and become an official, is confused and asks Cheng. Cheng tells him the truth and he saves his brother.
