A young man called Zhou Xuewen 周學文 sees a girl called Lu Qingyun 陸慶云 in a temple. Qingyun drops a golden fan, and Zhou picks it up. Zhou wants to marry Lu and asks a matchmaker to propose. However, Qingyun's father plans to present his daughter to the emperor. Zhou disguises himself as a woman and sells himself to the Lu family as an opera actress. He thus meets Qingyun and asks for her hand in marriage. Qingyun, who doesn't want to be the emperor's concubine, agrees. Eventually, Zhou Xuewen defeats the rebels and marries Qingyun.
