Liu xiang baojuan tells the story of a perfect young woman, Liu Xiangnü 劉香女, who resists all attempts to turn her away from practicing piety and ascends to Western Heaven as a result. After hearing a nun preach, she devotes herself to lay Buddhist practices of vegetarianism and nianfo. While she converts many, she also antagonizes her in-laws and suffers severe abuse at their hands, for which they are sent to the underworld until Xiangnü rescues their souls.

The full-length title, 太華山紫金鎮兩世修行劉香寶卷全集, is given on the first page of each Juan of the text. On the 版心 of each page, the shorted title 劉香卷 is used.
