The production of Jiu sheng chuan began in 1860, also the year when Patriarch Lü give it the name Qun ying tan 群英壇, and ended in 1863. After the book was completed, Qun ying tan was closed down at the will of Emperor Guan 關帝 (Wu sheng di jun 武聖帝君). The reason was that some people were found to pretend to be disciples of the altar for private interests, and the gods were worried that the altar, which should save people from the suffering, would be used to harm people.

Jiu sheng chuan 救生船 is a spirit written morality book originally produced by Qun ying tang群英堂 (or Qun ying tan群英坛) in eastern Sichuan in the early 1860s. The main god of the altar is 吕祖.
