The title page gives the title as 繪圖龍鳳配寶卷. “宣講勸善民間故事” was placed at the top of the title page and a picture of 普門大士 (觀世音菩薩 Avalokiteśvara). On the center of each page (版心), the shortened title in this edition is 龍鳳配寶卷.

註疏 Commentary

Authorship On page 1, under the title, it indicates the author under pseudonym: 太原醉痴生編. We can see the name of the publisher is 上海惜陰書局 in both the title page and the cover page. On the cover page that it also indicated two addresses: one as publisher: 上海閘北顺徵路二十六號內; another as the vendor: 上海四马路山东路口 .

Themes [上卷] Despite the beginning of the baojuan proclaiming merits of loyalty and filial piety 忠孝, the story of 龍鳳配 is marriage themed story happened in Yunnan 雲南 during Yuan dynasty.

The story starts with the 蟠桃會 in the heaven organised by Jade emperor 玉皇. Four celestial beings (東斗星君,執拂仙,焚香仙,and 執玉仙女/秉玉仙女) triggered their sentiments of the human world 动凡心 and thus are punished by 玉皇. 太白金星 arranges their descend to the human world. He chooses two families which have accumulated more merits to descend the celestial beings. 東斗星君 descended to 皇甫敬 family as the son 皇甫少華. 執拂仙 descended to 孟家 as the daughter 孟麗君. The couple later in the story will marry. 焚香仙 is descended to the 蘇 family as 蘇映雪, later as a concubine for Huangfu Shaohua 皇甫少華. 秉玉仙女 will be descended to the 劉family as 劉燕玉, who later will also marry Shaohua. The rest of the story is basically playing out this predetermined fate of everyone.

When Huangfu Shaohua皇甫少華 ages 15, his father Huangfu Jing 皇甫敬 would like to marry him with Meng Lijun 孟麗君. In the same time, the son of Liu family Liu Kuibi 劉奎壁 also asks marriage with Meng Lijun. Faced with a dilemma, Lijun’s father Meng Shiyuan 孟士元 comes up with an idea. He invites both Shaohua and Kuibi for an archery competition. He promised to marry his daughter to the winner. (Note: this scene is reminiscent of the scene of Lü Bu using his archery skills to dissuade Yuan Shu from attacking Liu Bei during Three Kingdoms, see 三國志卷七呂布 and 三國志通俗演義卷之四“呂奉先轅門射戟” )

Despite Kuibi shooting first, Shaohua wins the competition eventually. Shaohua also encountered Su yingxue 蘇映雪 during the process, who commits to becoming his concubine.


[下卷] Due to jealousy and hatred, Kuibi schemes to harm Shaohua. On receiving the invitation for the wedding, Kuibi invites Shaohua to his house for a visit. Shaohua obliges and falls into the trap by over-drinking in Kuibi’s home, not aware that Kuibi plans to kill him by arson during his sleep.

However, Kuibi is called to visit his sick grandma that evening. He reluctantly delegated the murder to his servant, Jiang Jinxi 江進喜. Jinxi is a kind person and the night before, he had a dream with deities telling him not to cause harm to others. He is thus reluctant to abide with the order from Kuibi. Meanwhile, the sister of Kuibi, Liu Yanyu 劉燕玉 (reincarnate of 秉玉仙女) had a dream the night before, where Gods told her that she would meet someone special the next day, whose life she will be responsible to save. Both Jinxi and Yanyu shared their dreams and situation with Jinxi’s mother Jiang Sansao 江三嫂, who connects the dots and then goes to save Shaohua. Shaohua is shocked with disbelief at the sudden turning of events. He exchanged commitment with Yanyu to marry her and left Liu family. On his way back home, he encounters a young Buddhist monk, who leads him back to the temple to meet his master. The old monk seems to already aware of everything. Few hours later, fire broke up in the Liu family, only by then Shaohua is convinced of Kuibi has been wanting to murder him.

Huangfu Jing 皇甫敬 and the whole family is terrified at what happened and their concern is only relieved by the fact that no trace of Shaohua is found in the debris after the fire. Huangfu Jing is suspicious of Liu Kuibi’s intention of murdering his son. He arrests Jingxi and interrogates him. Jingxi confesses everything while Shaohua returns home.

Concerned of the consequences if Huangfu Jing reported this case to the emperor, Kuibi decides to act first. He writes a letter to his father Liu Jie 劉捷, who holds high office (國丈, his sister is the Queen) in the court in the capital to revenge against Huangpu Jing. Chaoxian 朝鲜 invades the coast of Shandong 山东 led by Wu Bikai邬必凯. Liu Jie offers the name of Huangfu Jing when the emperor Chengzong 成宗 asks for advice. Huangpu Jing is then summoned from Yunnan to join the 山东巡抚彭如泽 and 登州总兵殷耀先 at the war front in Shandong to defend. On Huangpu Jing’s departure to Shandong, Meng Shiyuan 孟士元 recommends Wei Huan 衛煥 to go together to assist Huangfu Jing.

In Shandong, the Yuan army wins twice thanks to the martial capabilities of Wei Huan. However, in the third battle, Chaoxian army sends 神武道人 who is able to call winds and waves at will, defeats and captures both Huangfu Jing and Wei Huan. It concludes by indicating that the sequel is in 再生緣.
