Tongxuan guan zhi is a gazetteer of Tongxuan Temple 通玄觀, which was edited by Wu Chenyan 吳陳琰 and others in 1693, based on the original book (1534) written by Jiang Nan 姜南. Tongxuan guan is a famous Daoist temple in the history of Hangzhou 杭州, built in the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279) and mainly dedicated to Sanmao zhenjun 三茅真君.

註疏 Commentary

This is a gazetteer of Tongxuan Temple 通玄觀, which was edited with additions by Wu Chenyan 吳陳琰 and others in 1693, based on the original book (1534) written by Jiang Nan 姜南. It records the buildings and ancient ruins in the temple, collects various articles and poems, and documents the Daoist lineage of the temple. It also contains the three 勑牒 issued to Liu Ao 劉敖, the founder of Tongxuan Guan, in 1162.

Tongxuan Temple, located in Hangzhou 杭州, was built in the early years of the Southern Song Dynasty (mid-12th century) and was mainly dedicated to the worship of Sanmao zhenjun 三茅真君. Liu Ao 劉敖, the immortal Liu 劉真人, was originally a retainer to Emperor 宋高宗. In 1159, he dreamed of three immortal cranes and built a hall to worship Sanmao jun, which was given the name Tongxuan by the emperor. At the end of the Yuan Dynasty, the Daoist temple was destroyed. During the Chenghua period 成化 (1465-1487) of the Ming Dynasty, Xu Yuancheng 徐淵澄, a Daoist priest, and his disciple Xu Daozhang 徐道彰 came to this place and rebuilt the Tongxuan Temple and revived it with the 五雷法. During the Kangxi period 康熙 (1662-1722), Zhu Hongxu 朱閎緒 rebuilt the Sanqing Temple and led the re-editing of this gazetteer, the present book. During the Xianfeng period 咸豐 (1851-1861), the Tongxuan Temple was destroyed during the Taiping war.

This book records the Daoist statues of the Tongxuan guan, some of which are still preserved in Qibao Mountain: 劉真人, 元始天尊, 三茅真君, 徐法師. These statues are extremely rare and precious Daoist statues preserved locally in Hangzhou.
