Dated 1886, the current edition “Hui lang bao juan quan zhi 回郎寶卷全帙” is the earliest edition of five variant editions of the 回郎 story in the Waseda online collection. Compared with the 絵図囘郎宝巻坿新刻七七宝巻・知過必改 - WUL, this edition of 回郎寶卷全帙 is longer, with much more details in various scenes of the story. It also includes a few various texts before and after the 回郎寶卷. The details below are unique to this edition and not appearing in other versions of 回郎寶卷.
P.3b: Huilang’s birth is actually through the descent of the divinity You xi shen 遊嬉神, who wanted to escape from 玉帝 from the celestial court to the human world.
P.6b – P.8b: The reasoning of why 曹文政 wants to kill Huilang is more detailed, which according to him was because Huilang ate the portion of food which was supposed to be given to his grandma. The disagreement and argument between the couple on the idea of killing Huilang is more detailed and dramatic here. In the heat of the argument, there are added scenes of violence, where Wenzheng pulled Zhou’s hair and hit her on her temples. He also threatened Zhou that if they do not kill Huilang, he will kill her instead.
P.9b: Zhou said to Huilang: On your death when you report to the judge in the underworld, do not blame us your parents, but blame the famine which left us with no choice.
P.15a: Here identifies the emperor at the time was 嘉靖皇帝(1507-1567, reign 1521-1567).
P.20a – 20b: All of the main characters, models of filial piety received celestial titles here. 文政 as 孝母星官, 周氏 as 九天仙女, 回郎 as 插花童子.
P.21b: 回郎廟 was constructed, and the birthday to be celebrated 聖壽日 is every fifteenth day of the eighth month.
P.26b. “喫齋經” A text for the cessation of killing 戒殺, liberate animals 放生 and vegetarianism 喫素.
P.37a. “花名寶卷”
This baojuan is about how daughter in law should respect and serve her in-laws. This text is organised into twelve months, each represented by a different flower, combined with a detailed prescription of obligations toward in-laws and the rationale behind it.
P.42a. “法船經” A sectarian text on the dharma being the ferry for salvation, specifically, it mentioned 龍華會 in this text.
