A woman called Meng Xiuzhen 孟綉珍 marries a man called Wang Youdao 王有道. One day, Meng goes to visit her parents and returns home at night. Suddenly it rains, and she goes to a temple to seek shelter. A young man called Liu Shengchun 柳生春 passes by and enters the temple. Meng is very frightened. To comfort her, Liu talks to her and decides to stay and protect her from being hurt by bad people. The next morning, Liu sends Meng home. In the street, he picks up a key with a copper hanging on it. Meng tells her sister-in-law, Wang Jinlian 王金蓮, about what happened last night, and Jinlian tells her brother, Youdao. Youdao is furious and divorces his wife. Meng is sent back home, and her parents want her to marry again. To avoid being remarried, Meng commits suicide. But she doesn't die, and her parents stop pressuring her. Wang Youdao and Liu Shengchun both take the imperial examination. Wang comes second and Liu first. The examiner tells them that Wang should have been first, but somehow it turns out that Wang isn't. Liu and Wang think about whether or not they did something good that led to this result. Liu tells Wang about what happened at the temple. Wang knows that he has wrongly accused his wife. He goes to his wife's house and asks for forgiveness, and his wife finally forgives him. Liu Shengchun marries Wang's sister Jinlian, who lost the key in the street.
