A man named Li Wenjun 李文俊 is poor and seeks help from his fiancée's family. However, his father-in-law breaks off the engagement and forces him to work as a servant in their house. He meets his fiancée in secret and is discovered by his father-in-law. He is so angry that he kills his daughter. The girl is saved by the goddess of Xuannü 玄女. Eventually, Li passes the imperial examination and marries his fiancée. This story is set during the reign of Xiaozong emperor of the Song (Songxiaozong 宋孝宗 r.1162-1189). | |||

This edition is set during the reign of Xiaozong emperor of the Song （Songxiaozong 宋孝宗 r.1162-1189), and in 百花臺雙恩寳卷 - WUL87 and 百花臺雙恩寳卷 - WUL88, the story is set during the reign of Zhengde 正德 emperor of the Ming (r.1505-1521).
