The first version of this text was born in 1917 when the layman Xu Weiru 徐蔚如 printed five thousand copies of a humble collection of three of Yinguang’s letters as Letter Manuscripts of the Dharma Master Yinguang 印光法師信稿. In 1918, Xu then produced the first version of the Collected Writings of Master Yinguang 印光法師文鈔, which contained more than twenty letters. The Wenchao continually grew in size as Yinguang received and produced more letters, and after his death his students gathered together additional unpublished works. Since the eighties it has been possible to obtain the Collected Works 全集 of Yinguang’s writings, a multi-volume set edited by Shi Guangding 釋廣定, made up of more than a million characters.
Three editors can be accredited with preserving and organizing Yinguang’s letters and other writings between the earliest and latest editions of the Collected Works. Apart from the Wenchao proper, which was first published by Xu Weiru and then taken up by other publishers throughout the Republican period, the monk Miaozhen 妙真和尚 compiled the Yinguang fashi wenchao xubian (印光法師文鈔 續編) in 1937. Further, After Yinguang’s death, the layman Luo Hongtao 羅鴻濤居士 spent seven years collecting Yinguang’s letters. He used the Honghua Society’s Monthly Publication as a convenient way of advertising for undiscovered copies of letters. These are contained in the Collected Works in a volume called Yinguang fashi wenchao sanbian (印光法 師文鈔三編).[1]
