註疏 Commentary
- Though there is no date indicated in the text, Li Shiyu [1] and Sawada Mizuho [2] regard it as a Ming text. Daniel L. Overmyer[3] argues for its late Ming origin, and Che Xilun argues the earliest date of this text should be between 1617 and 1619 [4] The 11th, 12th, and 20th chapter (品) narrate that this precious scroll was originally printed in the patronage of a Madame Dong 董夫人 and her husband Lord Zhang 張員外 to fulfill their vow of praying for a baby son. This couple also patronized to print another precious scroll entitled 泰山天仙聖母靈應寶卷,[5] whose structure of the origin story of the Lady of Mount Tai is largely parallel to that in another earlier precious scroll 天仙聖母源流泰山寶卷. In general, this main theme of this text is to honor the luminous efficacy and compassion of the Lady of Mount Tai (also referred to as 碧霞元君) concerning female reproduction and childrearing.
