A man called Wu Xiuzhen 無修真 goes in search of a way to immortality. One night he is in the mountain and sees a house. He goes inside and meets five goddesses, who are Guanyin laomu 觀音老母, Wenshu laomu 文殊老母, Puxian laomu 普賢老母, Lishan laomu 離山老母 and Shizhi laomu 世枝老母. The goddesses teach Xiuzhen the principle of cultivation through five kinds of work, cotton ginning, cotton fluffing, cotton springing, cotton weaving and millstone pushing.
