A man called Mao Hong 毛洪 is engaged to a woman called Zhang Yuyin 張玉音. However, after the death of Mao's father, the family becomes poor and Zhang's father no longer wants to marry his daughter to Wang. Zhang is then forced to become engaged to another man. She commits suicide in the bride's palanquin and is reincarnated as another woman. This time, she is married to Wang.
