The book covers many themes : filial piety, respect for elders, respect for the gods, respect of rites, respect of animal life. There are also tales warning against theft, cruelty, lust, adultery, swindling, avarice, corruption, vicious behavior, infanticide, abortion, suicide, and tales promoting loyalty, charity, assistance to disaster victims, education of children, releasing of animal lives and respect for written characters.
