Gujin liexian tongji is a collection of biographies of Daoist immortals, compiled by Xue Daxun 薛大訓 (1602-1647), a scholar of late Ming. It has two editions, a Ming Dynasty edition published in 1640 and a Qing Dynasty edition published in 1649. The edition in Sandong shiyi is the Qing Dynasty version. The book consists of 60 fascicles (juan), collecting more than 800 biographies, as well as other Daoist classics such as 洞天福地名山記.

Gujin liexian tongji 古今列仙通紀 is a collection of biographies of immortals, edited by Xue Daxun 薛大訓 (1602-1647), a scholar and minor official of the Ming Dynasty.
The book has two editions. The first version, titled Shenxian tongjian 神仙通鑒, was published in 1640 during the Ming Dynasty and was proofread by Liu Yuliang 劉宇亮 (?-?, he once held a high official position) and others. It is now in the National Library of China, Beijing. Zhang Jizong 張繼宗 (1679-1715), the 54th Heavenly Master Zhang of Longhu Mountain, also compiled a collection of biographies of the immortals, titled Shenxian tongjian 神仙通鑑 or Lidai shenxian tongjian 歷代神仙通鑑.
The second edition, titled Liexian tongji 列仙通紀 or Gujin liexian tongji 古今列仙通紀, was published in 1649 in the Qing Dynasty, with two prefaces, from Wang Zongxi 王宗熙 and Wang Chenxi 王辰熙 (?-?). A biography of Qianshan Siming 潛山司命傳 written by Wang Zongxi was added at the end of the book. This is the edition found in the Sandong shiyi and the Siku quanshu cunmu congshu 四庫全書存目叢書, and it is followed by the "Siku Quanshu zongmu tiyao" 四庫全書總目提要.
Different fascicles are edited and proofread by different people. Most of the fascicles: 華亭孟衍生王宗熙校正；華亭□生王辰熙重訂；古吳六詁薛大訓纂輯；古潤靜闻釋傳達恭閱. Some of the fascicles: 明西蜀劉宇亮校.
In the preface, both Wang Zongxi and Wang Chenxi state their belief in the Jinmingdao 淨明道, and claim that the publication of this book was inspired by Xu Xun 許遜, i.e. Xu Zhenjun 許真君. Although Wang Zongxi says in the preface that the author, Xue Daxun, brought the book to him personally in 1649 (the year jichou 己醜), in fact, Xue died two years earlier of excessive grief because his father had committed suicide for the sake of the fall of the Ming Dynasty.
This book was edited and published during the change of dynasties in the Ming and Qing dynasties. Its purpose was not only to record the stories of the immortals and to express the desire to become immortal but also to pray to the immortals to save the chaotic world.
This book consists of sixty-six fascicles (juan), with a total of 877 biographies of the immortals according to the "Siku Quanshu zongmu tiyao" 四庫全書總目提要. It includes a great variety of deities, starting from Huangdi 黃帝, Yellow Emperor, and ending with Wen Taibao 溫太保, all of whom are Daoist deities, without mixing with Buddhist figures. However, there is no strict chronological order, and some of the characters are duplicated. Important deities such as Laozi 老子, Zhang Daoling 張道陵, and Xu Zhenjun 許真君 usually take up an entire fascicle. Many of the biographies in the book come from the famous collections of biographies, such as Liexian zhuan 列仙傳 and Lishi zhenxian tidao tongjian 歷世真仙體道通鑒. The book also includes non-biographical material such as "Dongtian fudi mingshan ji" 洞天福地名山記 and "Shizhou ji" 十洲記.
